Upon confirming your pregnancy at your doctor’s office, you will most likely be given a prescription for some prenatal vitamins. Prenatal vitamins are essential for a healthy pregnancy and should be taken even before conception if possible. If you missed the preconception boat, no need to worry. Just take your prenatal vitamins as soon as you can.
Remember, no two prenatal vitamins are the same, whether prescription or not. There are some important guidelines you should keep in mind when choosing yours.
- No prenatal vitamin will contain all the calcium you need for pregnancy. Supplement your vitamin with dairy products to get your fill of calcium.
- Too much vitamin A can cause birth defects. Choose a vitamin with under 10,000 IU of vitamin A.
- Some prenatal vitamins have too much iron in them, which will not absorb properly. Be sure that your prenatal vitamins contain absorbable iron.
- Some prenatal vitamins now have lipil added for added brain development benefits for your baby. This of course, is always a good idea.
