Pregnancy - 11 Weeks
Baby
Now measuring about 1 ½ inches and weighing just ¼ of an ounce, your baby is spending his days kicking and stretching. Through his transparent skin, you can see his blood vessels working, as his heart furiously pumps blood through his system at about 150 bpm. His bones are just starting to harden and tiny toothbuds are showing under his gums. Nearly all of his organs are formed and some are beginning to function. Fingers and toes have lost their webbed appearance and hair and nails are starting to grow.
Your baby’s genitals are starting to take shape. In just a few weeks, your pregnancy ultrasound will be able to tell you if you’re having a boy or a girl. Although your baby is moving around constantly in there, you won’t be able to feel his movements until you’re about 16 to 20 weeks along. You will, however, probably get to hear his heartbeat for the first time at your next prenatal appointment. You can’t help but beam with pride, as you hear your little one’s heartbeat for the first time. His first accomplishment!

Mom
You are most likely in the midst of morning sickness, and if not, you may at least be experiencing excess saliva. This is a normal hormonal reaction, as you also experience some major aversions to certain foods. What used to taste wonderful tastes terrible now. Many women get aversions to seafood, alcohol, coffee, and fatty meats. Each woman is different with what she craves and avoids, but many experts believe you have aversions to foods that can be bad for you or even dangerous, like raw fish. Your body may be telling you something when you gag at the sight of raw meat or eggs.
If you feel that you are not eating enough for your baby’s development, due to nausea, don’t worry. Your body will eventually catch up. Just make sure that those calories you are able to eat are not empty ones. Good nutrition is vital right now, as your body needs all that it can keep down. Be sure to stay hydrated. Chicken soup is great right now, as it is filled with vitamins and minerals, and it will help to hydrate you too.
